I will admit that fantasy is not my favorite genre to read, but my kids love it. I have tried to keep my opinion to myself, but have found a few books from this genre that I have thoroughly enjoyed.

We were introduced to 5 Children and It from the Ambleside Online booklists. In this story we meet the five children, Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and baby brother. One day while out digging they uncover It, a sand fairy, otherwise known as the Psammead. The children are elated when they discover he grants wishes. The only problem is that the wishes don't quite turn out they way the children expect them to and they end up in quite a bit of trouble.

The Phoenix and the Carpet continue the adventure with the children, but instead of the Psammead, they discover a Phoenix and a magic carpet. The kid's experience many adventures through time and space and never get quite what they expect from the magic in the end.

In Story of the Amulet the children discover the Psammead in a pet shop and rescue him. He helps them discover half of an amulet which leads them on a grand adventure of discovering the other half. Soon they are traveling to many different time and places, but the trouble really starts when the Queen of Babylon comes to visit England!

My kids' thoroughly enjoyed this series and they make great read-alouds. Read my full reviews:

Edward Eager is an author that was greatly influenced by E. Nesbit and wrote his books in honor of her. My daughter has read all of his books and they are favorites of her. We read Half-Magic as a family read-aloud and laughed our whole way through. Eager deals with magic in much the same way has Nesbit. It can be fun, but it tends to be more bother than it is worth.

Our favorite Nesbit books include:
Knight's Castle (my personal favorite!)

  3. Charlotte's Web is a favorite. I also just read Little Women to my six year old, she loved it. We have read passages from the Saturdays but never the entire book. My children would love this. Thanks for the chance to win.
