Legacy Documentaries: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder DVD (TOS Review)

Laura Ingalls Wilder is a name that is very well known to many children and adults. I'm sure most of us grew up reading her Little House books or watching the TV series (Not me, though, since we didn't have a TV.).  I was excited to be able to review The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder DVD from Legacy Documentaries.

The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder is a one hour documentary that delves into the true life story of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Not only does it tell of her growing up on the prairie, but continues to tell the story of her marriage, motherhood, becoming an author and how her books came to life.

The film is narrated by Dean Butler, or probably better known as Almanzo Wilder from the Little House on the Prairie TV series. The film is very engaging with it's beautiful scenic views, classic paintings, historic artwork, and original music score. Some of the footage include people portraying different eras of Laura's life. There are also interviews with 19th Century  historians and Laura Ingalls Wilder historians.

The main thread of the documentary is based on the development of Laura as a writer and the process that brought her to write her Little House books. We learn about all of the hardships that she and Almanzo faced in the beginning of their marriage. As her writing career unfolds, we see little tidbits about things that happened during her childhood. We also receive insight in her relationship with her only child, Rose.

At the end there is an extra bonus section called the "Director's Diary" which gives background on how this film came to be produced.  Two other bonus features give previews of DVDs available from Legacy Documentaries entitled Pa's Fiddle and Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura. (See other TOS Crew Reviews for more on this title.)

We sat down and watched this together as a family. We found this very engaging and interesting. We learned so much more information than what you read about in the Little House book series. Even though the Little House books aren't my favorite children's book I do think they show an important part of American life. I have to say that I came out with a great respect for Laura not only for the life she led but how she stayed true to keeping these books for children.

I have two kids that are in the middle of reading the Little House series, and I think that The Legacy of Laura Ingalls will help them understand Laura a little better and give a little more background to the books. This documentary makes Laura a real person. What she experienced in her lifetime was amazing. My daughter noted that her travels included covered wagons, trains, and even an airplane.

If you want to make a famous author and a period of American history come to Life I highly recommend The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder!

The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder is available for $24.95. Also available is Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura from Legacy Documentaries for $21.95.
