Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesday is hosted by Should be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
•Grab your current read
•Open to a random page

•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
•BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Okay for Now by Gary D. Schmidt

I finished this book in the wee hours of the morning since I couldn't put it down! This was an excellent read. Today I'm going to share a little more than two lines about the main character's thoughts on his English class.
In English, Miss Cowper was throwing us into the Introduction to Poetry Unit like it was as all-fired important as the moon shot. You know, that are good reasons to learn to read. Poetry isn't one them, I mean, so what if two roads go two ways in a wood? So what? Who cares if it made all that big a difference? What difference? And why should I have to guess what the difference is? Isn't that what he's supposed to say?
I don't think I could express my thoughts about poetry any better! As a homeschool mom I am trying to expose my kids to poetry, but so far none of us are very impressed, but we are pressing on!!

  1. I was chuckling while reading this. By any chance, the class was studying one of Ralph Emerson's poems? I was wracking my head for the poem's title or if I was thinking of the right poet. :D I know I came across 'crossroads' too back then. hehehe My prof even had us to draw the interpretation of the poems in our assignments. I feel for the protag. :D This looks like a fun book to read too. :D thanks for visiting

  2. Great teaser! I'm not big on poetry either and certainly would not want to teach about it!!! Good luck on that! I'm adding this to my TBR list.

  3. Some poetry I like, but only certain parts...the memorable ones, like one of my favorites from a Robert Frost poem about "miles to go before I sleep." I like to pick and choose my poetry...lol

  4. This explains why the vast majority of the publishing market is non-fiction. It's the only description of a road that has direct meaning for the reader.

  5. LOL, that is one way to look at poetry, and I figure most high school students feel that way :) Thanks for sharing- Book Savvy Babe

  6. I haven't read this one yet but I can't wait to get to it. I loved Schmidt's Wednesday Wars and this sounds like it has similar humor.

My teaser can be found here.

  9. Hi Beth,

A really fun teaser which made me smile, although from reading the synopsis, all is not as plain sailing as it sounds and I should think that this is proving to be quite an emotional read.

This is a new to me author, but he seems to have written some great insightful books and I have made a note of his name for my future reading.

I like to dip into poetry books from time to time, but if a poem doesn't hold my attention in the first couple of lines, then I probably won't finish reading it.

    Nice post, thanks for sharing,

    Yvonne

  10. Buahahaha! Nice post. Altough I'm sure Robert Frost wouldn't agree. Thanks for the teaser and for stopping by! :)

  11. LOL... That is understandable. When I was younger I used to write a LOT of poetry. I don't really have the patience for it any more. I write more stories then anything else.

And to this day there is only some poetry that I enjoy and that's mainly the ones that rhyme. LOL.

Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier, returning some of the love <3

  13. Poetry is so confusing. But once you figure out what it actually is saying, it can be really beautiful.

  16. There is too little appreciation of poetry these days. I confess that I like the more traditional poets like Emerson and Tennyson (and Dead Poet's Society is one of my all-time favorite movies), and do not care as much for some of the contemporary work being published. My teaser and blog

  17. So glady you enjoyed Okay for Now. Isn't it wonderful? :-)

(No comment on the poetry. I like it, but I'm having a hard time convicing my girls. . .)

  18. I LOVE this teaser. This alone was enough to convince me to read this book. The author really has the teen voice down.

So thanks for the recommendation. Mine is at:
