Book Review: Alice's Adventure in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Book Description:
Alice falls down, down, down into a land of wonder, a place filled with White Rabbits, Mock Turtles, screaming Queens, and Mad Hatters. Join Alice as she experiences the silliness and excitement of a place gone crazy. Join thousands, even millions, of children who over the years have read about and entered into . . . Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

My thoughts:
I am slowly reading through our list of Ambleside Online Year 3 free reading and it was time to tackle Alice's Adventures in Wonderland  by Lewis Carroll. Yes, I said tackle. When Caleb was doing this I had him listen to the audio and it wasn't a big hit, so I decided this time around I would read it aloud and see if it produced different results.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland  does has its funny moments, but honestly it is just plain weird! I was struggling with the fact that Carroll was making references to something I didn't have a clue about and I found that frustrating. Fortunately, that wasn't a problem with my kids. They seemed to enjoy the nonsense of the story. Reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland aloud was a success and we are continuing the story with Through the Looking-Glass . I have placed a hold for The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Edition from the library hoping it will help this poor mother, who needs some enlightening!

  1. You know, I felt similarly when I read Mary Poppins. It is just WEIRD in places. We saw a local stage version of Alice last year and it "took after" the Johnny Depp version (which I haven't seen, but I can imagine). Maybe it just IS weird, huh?

    One day I'll tackle it!

  2. I've never like Alice (maybe it's all the "hey where's the white rabbit" comments I got growing up). I did like the Johnny Depp version. The actress is outstanding and the interpretation of a much older Alice made more sense to me and just worked better somehow.

  3. We read both Alice books this past Fall. I definitely liked Adventures inWonderland better than Through the Looking Glass. I'm not quite sure why, but somehow I think Looking Glass made even less sense to me than the first book did!

  4. I've always thought every film production I've seen was weird too. I've never read the book but thought maybe I'd try it at somepoint this year. Do you think it's worth reading?

  5. I think Alice and Throught the Looking Glass are lots of fun, but maybe you have to be in the mood, a rather silly mood. It does have some of my favorite quotations such as this one:

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less.”

“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.”

“The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master – that’s all.”

  6. This is a classic I've read repeatedly, hoping each time that I'll finally "get it." Maybe someday!

  7. I reviewed this book this week, as well. I had such high hopes for it, as I am a bit quirky myself, but it was just bizarre. I might read it again sometime down the road. :)
