Reading Journal #19: Wonderland Creek by Lynn Austin & Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson
Wonderland Creek by Lynn Austin
My thoughts:
Wonderland Creek tells the story of Alice Ripley a librarian who lives vicariously through books. Set during the Depression, Alice find her life in an upheaval when she loses her boyfriend and her job all in a matter of days. With time on her hands, Alice decides to hitch a ride with her aunt to deliver donated books to a small coal mining town in Kentucky. She also decides to stay and help the local librarian Leslie McDougal sort and file the books. Imagine her surprise when she discovers Leslie is a man!
When Leslie is shot Alice has to pitch in and help around the house. She is also put into service becoming a pack horse librarian. As she learns to survive without electricity and how to ride a horse, she quickly learns that this little Kentucky town has deep secrets and mysteries. As Alice slowly becomes involved with the people and in helping Leslie, she realizes that real life can be way more exciting than books.
This book had many things going for it--libraries, books, the Depression, and small backwoods towns. I enjoyed reading about Alice's adventures and how she learns how to really live. This was a fun read filled with humor and suspense and a story I really enjoyed!
Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson
My thoughts:
I have read many good things about Marilynne Robinson's books and I picked up Housekeeping when I couldn't find anything to read. Unfortunately, I should have just left it alone. I found the plot of this story confusing. It was a strange story and honestly, I found it very depressing. I was disappointed and don't know if I'll be inclined to try another of her books.

I read Wonderland Creek a couple of months ago and enjoyed it a lot except it bothered me that Alice was often forced or tricked into doing what the other two Christian people wanted her to.
