Reading Journal - March 6, 2012: Simplify, Chasing Mona Lisa, and More

Simplify Joshua Becker

My thoughts:
This was just an okay book. So many of these book seemed to be based in humanistic views that just don't sit well with me. As with most self-help books, I take what I feel works for me and leave the rest.

The Doctor's Lady by Jody Hedlund

My thoughts:
A great piece of historical fiction, based loosely on Narcissa Whitman. Read my review here.

Chasing Mona Lisa by Tricia Goyer & Mike Yorkey

My thoughts:
A story about the liberation of Paris at the end of World War II. When a plot is uncovered about the Nazi's stealing the Mona Lisa the chase is on. As much as I wanted to really like this story I found many parts of it disjointed. I'm not sure if this was due to the writing of it or from reading it on my Kindle, where it isn't the easiest thing to look back at something.

The Berlin Boxing Club by Robert Sharenow

My thoughts:
This book caught my eye after watching a short sports documentary about the boxer Max Schmeling. I started this book and finally gave up. As a mom of a teenage boy I was floored at the all the references to woman's bodies, let alone the language and other things If I could rate this with a film rating it would be R-rated at the least! I can't imagine placing this book in any young adults hands. Nevertheless, Max Schmeling still interests me so I will content myself with finding a biography instead.

  1. Hi Beth! I happened to stumble upon your blog and it intrigued me. I love to read - so does my brother, who's 10 yrs old. He's read the Chronicles of Narnia series at least three times over, and has run out of books to read. I'm constantly on the lookout for books with action and adventure - do you know of any that you would recommend for him to read?
