Book Description:
Not your everyday book on parenting, Gospel-Powered Parenting is a practical guide to parenting that highlights the differences the Gospel makes in the lives of parents as much as it does about parenting techniques. Farley talks about the spiritual basis of parenting, a subject most books ignore. My thoughts:
I had Gospel-Powered Parenting: How the Gospel Shapes and Transforms Parenting by William P. Farley on my TBR list almost a year before I was finally able to purchase it and get it read. Mr. Farley's main thesis is effective application of the gospel empowers parents to reach their children's hearts.
In the first half of the book the author discusses the theology of the fear of God, the new birth, the importance of the cross, and the depth of God's infinite grace. The second half of the book shows how to apply gospel-powered parenting: by example in our marriage, biblical masculinity, the foundation of parental discipline and the importance of aiming for the heart, teaching your children the Word of God, and demonstrating affection.
I have to admit that the first half of the book seemed to go by slowly. I think this was due to the fact he is very thorough in his writing. I really enjoyed the second half of applying gospel-powered parenting and found them very encouraging and convicting. Overall, Gospel-Powered Parenting: How the Gospel Shapes and Transforms Parenting has given me quite a bit of food for thought and will fall in my re-read list.
Great review! I must admit that I'm pretty much past the phase of reading parenting books, though!
