Book Review: Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey

The Daughter of Time

Book Description:
Josephine Tey re-creates one of history's most famous -- and vicious -- crimes in her classic bestselling novel, a must read for connoisseurs of fiction, now with a new introduction by Robert Barnard
Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard, recuperating from a broken leg, becomes fascinated with a contemporary portrait of Richard III that bears no resemblance to the Wicked Uncle of history. Could such a sensitive, noble face actually belong to one of the world's most heinous villains -- a venomous hunchback who may have killed his brother's children to make his crown secure? Or could Richard have been the victim, turned into a monster by the usurpers of England's throne? Grant determines to find out once and for all, with the help of the British Museum and an American scholar, what kind of man Richard Plantagenet really was and who killed the Little Princes in the Tower.

The Daughter of Time is an ingeniously plotted, beautifully written, and suspenseful tale, a supreme achievement from one of mystery writing's most gifted masters.
My thoughts:
While browsing my library bookshelves for something to listen to, I picked up The Daughter of Time, narrated by Derek Jacobi. I really did not know what the story was about, except that my son will be reading it next term for school. Wow, was I ever surprised! I absolutely loved this book. The whole weaving of the "modern" characters along with  the research done about Richard III made for an exciting, interesting, humorous and very compelling story. Derek Jacobi does a wonderful job of narrating. Hopefully, in the future I will get back around to actually reading The Daughter of Time and other books that Josephine Tey has written.

Book Review: The Doctor's Sweetheart by L.M. Montgomery

The Doctor's Sweetheart

Book Description:
In this remarkable collection of fourteen previously uncollected stories, L.M. Montgomery weaves her unique brand of magic as she explores the private passions of the heart. A country doctor never loses faith in the young woman who swears to return to him; a beautiful maiden, in a fit of pique, recklessly pledges to marry the very first man who asks her; an estranged wife bets her future happiness on a horse race; two maiden ladies, scared onto a roof by a dog, ponder marriage to the dog's owner as the price of rescue. These are some of the unforgettable characters whose stories--of romance and friendship reconciliation and abiding love--live again in an anthology L.M. Montgomery readers will treasure.

My thoughts:
I have to admit that I am a short story girl, but I have enjoyed L.M. Montgomery's stories. They cover many topics and are filled with humor, sweetness, sadness, love and friendship. These stories portray in uniqueness of L.M. Montgomery storytelling.

When I first started The Doctor's Sweetheart I thought I had never read it, but by the end many of the stories were  familiar.  I have either read the book before, or some of these stories appear in other books. If you have read Anne of Ingleside (Anne of Green Gables, No. 6) you will recognize the story, "I Know a Secret".  Overall, I found The Doctor's Sweetheart an enjoyable and easy read.

Some of my favorite stories include:
"The Girl and the Wild Race"
"The Parting of Ways"
"Abel and His Great Adventure"

The Girl and the Boots

While shopping at Target, I came across these boots on clearance for an excellent price. Delani loves all things doing with shoes and has fallen in love with them. When she woke up this morning she wanted them on. I did coax them off of her for her nap, but afterwards they went back on and she is still going strong in them. She is definitely a girly girl!

Book Review: Spiritual Parenting by Michelle Anthony

Spiritual Parenting: An Awakening for Today's Families

Book Description:

In Spiritual Parenting parents learn to create a home environment that God can use to work in their children’s lives. It’s a biblical, innovative fresh approach to parenting—and one that’s long overdue.
It’s hard enough to train kids to behave, but good behavior isn’t what Jesus calls for in the Bible. He wants hearts and souls that are shaped in vibrant faith and love toward God and others. How can parents cultivate this in their children? In this book Dr. Michelle Anthony shares practical examples and biblical insight on the spiritual role of parenting.

Spiritual Parenting introduces the simple, but revolutionary concept that parents are, by the power of God’s Spirit, to obey and depend on God in order to create an environment God can use to beckon their children to Him.

My thoughts:
I have to admit I am a glutton for reading parenting books, but if I find a nugget of truth to help me in my parenting journey, I feel that it time well spent. Spiritual Parenting: An Awakening for Today's Families by Michelle Anthony was such a book. In fact, Michelle Anthony calls these nuggets of truth a Parenting "Aha!" and shares 10 distinct environments that parents can create their homes. These include: Storytelling, Identity, Faith Community, Service, Out of the Comfort Zone, Responsibility, Course Correction, Love and Respect, Knowing, and Modeling. I appreciated the author's use of scripture to support these environments and received many "Aha" moments. If you are interested in becoming a better parent, a spiritual parent, I highly recommend Spiritual Parenting: An Awakening for Today's Families.

Book Review: Tangled Web by L. M. Montgomery

Tangled Web

Book Description:
Over the years sixty members of the Dark family and sixty Penhallows have married one another--but not without their share of fighting and feuding. Now Aunt Becky, the eccentric old matriarch of the clan, has bequeathed her prized possession: a legendary heirloom jug. But the name of the jug's new owner will not be revealed for one year. In the next twelve months beautiful Gay Penhallow's handsome fiance Noel Gibson leaves her for sly and seductive Nan Penhallow; reckless Peter Penhallow and lovely Donna Dark, who have hated each other since childhood, are inexplicably brought together by the jug; Hugh and Joscelyn Dark, separated on their wedding night ten years ago for reasons never revealed, find a second chance--all watched over by the mysterious Moon Man, who has the gift of second sight. Then comes the night when Aunt Becky's wishes will be revealed...and the family is in for the biggest surprise of all.
My thoughts:
I picked A Tangled Web for The L.M. Montgomery Reading Challenge hosted by Carrie at Reading to Know . In true Montgomery fashion, she weaves many stories into one, and through all the ups and downs all the stories come to a very satisfying conclusion. This is a darker story than many of her other stories and from my research this book was written for an adult audience. I also found she used stronger language in this book than I remember in any of her other books. Overall, I found A Tangled Web a delightful read.

Tangled Web

Tangled Web by L.M. Montgomery

She was too fond of telling them what she called the plain truth. And, as Uncle Pippen said, while the truth was all right, in its place, there was no sense in pouring out great gobs of it around where it wasn't wanted. [p. 2]
