Raising a Modern-Day Knight: A Father's Role in Guiding His Son to Authentic Manhood

Book Description:

What does it mean to be a man? Moreover, how does a father instill these qualities in his son? Using as an example the process by which a boy moved through the medieval stages of knighthood, Robert Lewis identifies parallel stages for today's fathers to create ceremonies to commemorate significant milestones in a young man's journey toward becoming a modern-day knight. Beginning with a biblical perspective of manhood, Robert Lewis shares a unique approach to shaping a boy into a man by equipping him with three essential elements: a vision, a code of conduct, and a cause (Christianity) in which to invest his life. Complete with ceremony ideas to celebrate accomplishments and ingrain them in his mind, this softcover is as insightful as it is practical in raising a boy to be a chivalrous, godly man.

My thoughts:
I know that Raising a Modern-Day Knight: A Father's Role in Guiding His Son to Authentic Manhood is geared for fathers, but since I'm the reader in the family and we have a son of the verge of manhood, I decided it was time to read it.

In Raising a Modern-Day Knight, Robert Lewis challenges fathers to turn their boys into men. In his introduction he shows the need for this in our culture:
You need to know, Dad, that your son and thousands like him are presently being stripped of their maleness by a modern, secular, feminist culture. Over the last few decades, this culture has steadily and relentlessly undermined healthy notions of what it means to be a man. Once-noble images of masculinity have now been replaced by images of men behaving badly...or incompetently...or both. Manhood is no longer a unique calling; it's now seen more as a problem to overcome.
The book goes on to show, using the example of knighthood and biblical principles, how to take steps in answering the question, "What is a man?"  Filled with stories and packed full of ideas, Raising a Modern-Day Knight is a wonderful resource for parents wanting their sons to take pride in their manhood.

I am passing this book on to my husband to read and look forward to using some of the ideas presented in this book with our sons.
