The Homeschool Mother's Journal - February 27-March 2, 2012

Yeah! I finished Math U See Delta!
Oh, no! Another book??

In my life this week…
Monday was a pretty typical day. Shade got off work early, which doesn't help the pocketbook, but God is control!

Tuesday I called and made an appointment for Shade since he has had a pesky cough for over a week. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic and cough syrup. The kids and I headed up to the library where I work, where Shade picked them up.

Wednesday I was awakened by my husband walking in the room announcing he was sick. He had gone to work only to turn around and come home. That cough syrup that the doctor prescribed DID NOT sit well with him at all! He spent the day sleeping in his chair, while the kids and I did school.

We were blessed to have Shade home with us for a sick day. Thank the Lord, he was feeling much better. We had to spend some of the day preparing for our church business meeting while the kids worked on their school work.

Friday is an easy day for us, so the kids whipped through their work and then we headed out to run some errands at Ross', Staples,Walmart and Famous Footwear, where Destini got a new pair of shoes since her old ones had holes in them. At Staples, I am totally liking all that wonderful Martha Stewart Home Office with Avery products. Shade was able to head back to work.

I mentioned last week that I had started potty training Delani. It has gone great!! She is doing so good. Tuesday we had a small setback, but I take the blame for part of it (leaving a Pull-up on is just asking for trouble). She is finally start to tell us when she has to use the potty, though we still keep a close watch on her. She has been staying dry at night and would love to wear panties. I still insist on a Pull-up for now and she absolutely hates them!

In our homeschool this week…
Our Term 2 is mostly complete.

Destini and Chantry finished up Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Destini started Epsilon in Math U See. We have upped her pages per week and am aiming to get one lesson done per week. She also had to write her first report this week. That was an interesting experience. Her complaining that she couldn't do it and me prodding and encouraging her that she could!

Caleb finished up Mystery of History III. He is really, really disappointed that book four is not ready. He worked on his writing, but was thrilled to find out at the last minute that we had to cancel writing class this week!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
Homegrown Learners has a great blog post about reading aloud to children and keeping little hands busy.

I am inspired by…
Pinterest--now, if I only had the time to do everything I pin!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
We were mostly home-bodies this week. We did make it to the library and went out on our little shopping expedition.

My favorite thing this week was…
Time spent around the dinner table. On Monday evening we were sitting around the table and everyone was having a great time. Destini was entertaining us to the point we were having to wipe our eyes we were laughing so hard.

What’s working…
Charlotte Mason art study! We are studying Albert Bierstadt for this Terms artist. Today our picture was The Last of the Buffalo.

We watched this YouTube clip, which started my class clown on a roll. Everything the two middle kids pointed out was followed with "by the dead and the dying buffalo."  This was also said in a dark, ominous tone. Needless, to say there was a lot of laughter going on. I don't know if they are soaking up any "fine arts", but I don't think they will forget this picture for a while!

Questions/thoughts I have…
What to do, what to do???? Caleb has finished Mystery of History III and I'm not to sure where to go. Do we jump in American History and wait for MOH IV to be finished? Or do I use finish up the cycle using Notgrass World History and finished this year? He really likes MOH. I'm not too sure about Notgrass' History--it looks a little dry.

He needs a credit in American History and also a credit in Government/Economics so I have a lot to work on this next week. We have picked out what we want to do for Government, so that leaves American History and Economics.

Things I’m working on…
Schedule for our new term.

Also, we are going to be sending our kids to the ACTS Oregon West Coast Student Convention which our church organization put on. (It is similar to ACE Student Conventions.) We are working on selecting events that each kids can do. So far we are looking at puppets for Caleb and Destini and a poetry recitation for Chantry. Probably they will enter some writing and photography and Destini some sewing events.

I’m reading…

See my Reading Journal for this week.

I’m cooking…
Homemade pizza, popcorn chicken, and quesadillas.

I’m grateful for…
My daughter, Destini, who has such a wonderful sense of humor!

I’m praying for…
My friend, Lesly, who needs a miracle and healing.
