Cell Phone vs. Bible

Here is a thought provoking little message:

"CELL PHONE vs. BIBLE"
(author unknown)
I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone?

What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
What if we flipped through it several times a day?
What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?
What if we used it to receive messages from the text?
What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it?
What if we gave it to kids as gifts?
What if we used it when we traveled?
What if we used it in case of emergency?

This is something to make you go....hmm...where is my Bible? Makes you stop and think "where are my priorities?"

Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill. And no dropped calls!

Lego Fun

Chantry built this "space ship" today while Caleb and Destini were doing their school work. His brother helped him build a gun on the back, but the rest he built himself. Needless to say, I am pretty impressed.

Book Review: Better than Life by Daniel Pennac

I found this book while browsing the parenting section of books at my local libary. I actually figured I wouldn't even get it all read in my alloted check out time. I picked this up late last evening before going to bed to read a few chapters. Needless to say I finished the book. The theme of this book centers around reading and what book lovers treasure. It covers topics such as how reading aloud can ensure a love of books begins, the importance of childen developing a relationship with books and "The Reader's Bill of Rights" which are as follows:

The Reader's Bill of Rights
Everyone has the right to read. Here's The Reader's Bill of Rights to help you make the most of that right: Readers have:

1. The right to not read.
2. The right to skip pages.
3. The right to not finish.
4. The right to reread.
5. The right to read anything.
6. The right to escapism.
7. The right to read anywhere.
8. The right to browse.
9. The right to read out loud.
10. The right not to defend your tastes.
—Pennac, Daniel, Better Than Life, Coach House Press, 1996.

Right now I'm dealing with a beginning reader and an 11 year old who reads because Mom tells him to. After reading this book I was encouraged to read out loud more to my kids. I have been doing this, but had slacked off. Will this make my kids love reading? I don't know, but I want to do everything within my power to encourage a love of reading in them.

What is a favor?

This is the conversation that happened between Chantry and mom.

Chantry: "Mom, what does favor mean?"

Mom: "What does favor mean??!"

Mom: "Dad, what does favor mean?"

Dad: (No response)

Mom: Well, favor means to do something special for someone.

(Slight break in conversation as Chantry thinks about this.)

Chantry: "Mom, will you do a favor?"

Dad: (Laughing!!)

Let is snow!

Tuesday morning we woke up to snow! The kids were thrilled. Dad even got a day and half off of work! We kept school work to a minimal and enjoyed the snow and Dad!

Book Review: Mother Carey's Chickens

I recently finished this book by Kate Douglas Wiggin and was greatly touched by it. I felt like I had read a great tribute to motherhood. The book starts off with the loss of a father and husband. Mother Carey must round up her "chickens" and move on with life. Even with all the creativity and ingenuity that the family have I found the characters to be very down to earth. I had initially bought this book with the intention of donating it to my library, but I have since decided it will go in my personal library with the hopes of rereading it in a year or two.

Finally!

Well, I finally have come up with a name I like for this blog. As for the other technical things hopefully I'll figure those out with time. My name is Beth and this blog is to record happenings in my family's life and thoughts I just think I need to share. I am basically a stay-at-home mom, with a side job as the contractor for our local library Friends' bookstore. I have been married for 14 years to my wonderful husband , Shade, for 14 years. God has blessed us with three beautiful children, two sons, Caleb (11) and Chantry (4) and our daughter, Destini (7). We worked in full-time ministry until 2003 when we moved from the Midwest to the Northwest to start a church. At that time my husband had to get a full time job to support our family. The Lord provided with a job that allowed me to stay home and homeschool our children! So now starting the 4th year of homeschooling I'll be able to journal about the happenings or "weavings" that fill our life.
